PROFESSOR JENNIFER VISSER-ROGERS
STATISTICIAN
Mystery Map was a two part series that was broadcast by ITV1 in November 2013 which explored some of the nation’s best-known mysteries and unexplained occurrences. Using reconstructions and interviews with eyewitnesses and experts each story was brought to life, considering why people believe in them and examining possible explanations. The second episode considered spontaneous human combustion and what the chances are of actually dying from it (the last recorded case was in Galway, Ireland in 2011 for all you sceptics out there). I was tasked with calculating this probability and also exploring what you are more likely to die from instead.
